10 Pro Tips to Turn the Tide in XCOM 2

XCOM 2 is a brutal strategy game where one wrong move can end a campaign. Whether you're a fresh commander or a veteran struggling on Legend difficulty, these ten tips will help you survive the alien occupation and lead humanity to victory.

1. Overwatch is Your Best Friend and Worst Enemy

Overwatch traps are powerful, but reckless use can waste a soldier's turn. Use Overwatch when enemies are out of line-of-sight and will move into your firing lines. Never Overwatch a pod you've already activated—shoot first. Consider using the “Conceal” ability to set up ambushes with multiple Overwatches.

2. Prioritize Grenadiers Early

Grenadiers are the backbone of any squad. Their grenades destroy cover, shred armor, and can flush enemies out of position. Always bring at least one Grenadier on every mission. The “Salvo” ability lets them fire a heavy weapon and still move, making them incredibly versatile.

3. Don’t Ignore the Resistance Ring

The Resistance Ring is available early in the expansion War of the Chosen, but even in vanilla, the Resistance HQ offers valuable bonuses. Complete covert actions to earn ability points, resources, and even new soldiers. Focus on missions that reduce Avatar Project progress or give scientists/engineers.

4. Spread Your Research Wisely

Don't rush for magnetic weapons and ignore armor. A balanced approach is key. Start with a few breakthroughs (e.g., Modular Weapons for extra weapon mod slots), then prioritize weapons, then armor. Also, research autopsies early for useful gear like the Medkit upgrade or the Skulljack.

5. Use Concealment to Scout

Until you reveal your squad, you have a huge advantage. Move your concealed Ranger ahead to scout enemy positions without triggering a pod. This lets you set up perfect ambushes. Even after contact, consider retreating a concealed soldier to re-establish Overwatch traps.

6. Master the Art of Flanking

Flanking shots ignore cover and have high crit chances. Use your Scout or a Sharpshooter with “Gunslinger” to move into flanking positions. However, be careful: enemies also get flanking bonuses against you. Never move a soldier into a position where they can be flanked themselves.

7. Build the Guerilla Tactics School Early

The GTS is essential for increasing squad size. Getting that fifth soldier slot (or sixth with upgrades) is a game-changer. It also allows you to train abilities like “Phantom” for Rangers or “Blademaster” for Templars. Prioritize upgrading squad size before advanced gear.

8. Don’t Be Afraid to Retreat

If a mission goes sideways, it's better to evacuate than lose your entire squad. Use evac flares wisely. If you're overwhelmed, call for extraction and live to fight another day. Losing a Colonel with high Will can cripple your campaign.

9. Level Up Your Soldiers in Covert Actions

In War of the Chosen, Covert Actions reward ability points, promotions, and even new classes. Use them to train rookies into specialists. In vanilla, assign soldiers to missions that grant bonus XP. Always keep a training pool of rookies, so you don't run out of soldiers.

10. Exploit the Chosen’s Weaknesses

The Chosen are deadly, but they all have weaknesses. Research them in the Shadow Chamber and equip gear that exploits those flaws (e.g., armor piercing vs. the Hunter, mind shields vs. the Warlock). Also, learn their attack patterns: never bunch up when facing the Warlock, and always have a plan to break line-of-sight against the Hunter.

Apply these tips, and you'll see your casualty rates drop. Remember: in XCOM 2, patience and preparation are as important as firepower. Good luck, Commander.
